on the eve of the 50th anniversary egg v. WadeOne in four women of reproductive age have only two options left, overturned by the Supreme Court last year. 14 states If you want an abortion: Seeking Care Out of State Also self-managing one’s own abortionThis month, a 20-something single mother in Texas (I’ll call her Alauni) decided to secretly take abortion pills at home.
Duplicate Abortion Prohibition Trio made abortion illegal In Texas, except for narrowly defined medical emergencies. The legal and financial consequences are severe, with civil penalties of over $100,000 and up to life imprisonment. Anyone A person who performs abortions or assists abortion seekers. The law explicitly prohibits criminalizing abortion seekers, but Texas prosecutors have not stopped it in the past. egg Overturned, 26-year-old Texan Rizel Herrera indicted In a murder case that allegedly self-induced an abortion. After a nationwide outcry, the charges were dropped.
Given these risks, Alauni spoke with Kat under the condition that she publish her story under a pseudonym and asked not to disclose how she obtained the abortion pills. , their fear of being forced to continue with unwanted pregnancies, and their frustration with systems not set up to support mothers like her.
My first thought was Oh shoot, never again, But I already knew I was pregnant. I was on plan B and after more than 24 hours it felt like it wasn’t working. I knew right away that I wanted an abortion. Now that I have several, I don’t think I want any more children. i was thinking, I literally just bought this new car and it’s just big enough for the kids I have. I just moved. If you have another child, you will have to move again to make room for that child. I can afford most things now, but if I had another child, I wouldn’t be able to do it.
Due to Texas laws and travel risks, self-management was my only option. I found out around Christmas. Money is always short around Christmas, especially if you already have kids. I didn’t even have to calculate the numbers. I knew I needed to self-manage at home.
I took the first pill at 7pm and the second pill the next day at 7pm. I have had abortions before. It was exactly like my previous abortions..except when I do it in the clinic, I take the first pill at the clinic and the second at home. Some women do, but I think I have a higher tolerance for pain than most people. The bleeding will continue for a while, but if you’ve had a period before, it’s mostly like that – a little more than usual, but nothing to worry about.
In Texas, even going to a doctor or hospital is not safe if you suspect you are pregnant. Once they have that information, if they miscarried or lost a baby out of nowhere and didn’t report it, they could be investigated. And even if you travel out of state to get an abortion, you can still run into problems. Staying at home is easier. You are where you are most comfortable.
It’s also very frustrating. Expect the best, but prepare for the worst. A month later, I have another pregnancy test. And if it’s not negative, make sure the line is fading. Continue testing until it’s negative. I need to keep it going to make sure the pregnancy is actually finished and go from there. But if you don’t, you need to be prepared for life at that point.
Under current laws, knowing that you could be forced into an unwanted pregnancy is terrifying. There will be more cases of people being left outside. Women are doing extra things they don’t need to do. A simple solution is to make abortion accessible to us.
Men have it so easily it’s like a war against women. You can have 100 babies in a year and don’t have to be held accountable for it, but women are held accountable for it. It will be. i am a single mother. My children’s father receives child support, but neither of them pays. i have to do everything myself. It’s scary to know that if I get pregnant again, the father may not want to be involved in the child’s life and will leave it all up to me.
Then when I need help — WIC for food stamps and formula and diapers — I’m like a bad mother because I can’t take care of my kids or can’t afford it. We look ineligible. It’s embarrassing whenever we have to ask — we go for help and get rejected. You have to worry about CPS getting involved—in fact, I had to deal with her CPS at one point. Being a parent involves a lot. Bringing a child into the world is a bigger responsibility than many people think.
It’s really hard when you’re living on just one income. Especially if you need help. Yeah I may be ‘overmaking’ but I have all these kids I have to take care of. I have to earn that much to take care of him, but I’m barely there. Today, day care averages about $200 per child per week. If you have multiple children, it costs hundreds of dollars. My rent is $1,300. If you’re paying that much for day care, and she’s paying $1,300 in rent and expenses, you’re forced to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and never be near your kids. At that point, you end up ignoring the kids, and that can become a problem as well.
Abortion goes into many other topics. Everything from diapers to formula to wipes is getting more expensive. You can ride the WIC, but you must qualify. If you are not eligible, you will have to purchase the formula. Formulas are expensive. Many mothers are unable or do not have time to breastfeed because of the need to maintain a home. they have to keep their jobs. Even if you have other children, you must pay attention to them as well. If you can’t afford formula, you look like a bad parent because you can’t afford to feed your child. We cannot live like this. it’s difficult.
Especially after sharing my first abortion story, people said to me: If I was irresponsible I would have had the baby and that baby would have suffered. If I had been selfish I would have had that baby.
At the time of my first abortion, I was financially unstable and unable to have another child. I had just had a baby and was dealing with a lot of physical abuse from my father. At the time it wasn’t right for me to bring another child into the world. I went to New Mexico. It was four and a half hours away. The organization assisted with accommodation. They helped Gus. Then I got there and still had to pay the abortion balance — out of nowhere they were able to come up with even more funds to fully cover it so I had a little in my pocket I was able to have extra money. The procedure at the clinic was very smooth. Everyone was so nice. The experience wasn’t perfect. It was amazing to have all the support from the organization. Then coming home to that situation I was in… going back was traumatic.
But that first abortion allowed me to be where I am today. If I had had to have another child at that point, I would have been in a worse position already and that would have set me back further. Some women may have health problems. Some women may not be in the right position at the time, but want children later. When a woman has an abortion, she does not have to explain to anyone why she did it. That’s her right.
I know I’m not the only one who has to go through this: I have to self-manage or find a way to self-manage. we have to help ourselves.
