This isn’t the first leg of Clarissa Ward’s pregnancy, but CNN’s chief international correspondent is going through a journey like never before as she reports from the front lines of the war in Ukraine.
Ward is pregnant and is expecting another son with her husband Philipp von Bernstorff this spring. The couple already have sons Casper, 2, and Ezra, 4.
Ward, who has spent more than 12 weeks covering news in Ukraine since the civil war began in February 2022, spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about her exciting news, describing her pregnancy journey as “pretty challenging.” It is explained that it was “target”.
“Obviously, going back to Ukraine at 20 weeks pregnant is a different experience,” says Ward, who is in Kharkov to film a special that will air on CNN ahead of next month’s Ukrainian War Day.
“I’m not going to be on the front lines and the team has put in a lot of effort to find all the perinatal facilities along our route,” she continues. And with the bitter cold, it can still be pretty tough. You have to take care of yourself, but remember that thousands of Ukrainian women go through this every day.”

Now in her second trimester, she’s “always found to be kind of in the sweet spot of being pregnant,” Ward says.
“I don’t feel nauseous and I have a lot of energy.”
As she prepares to add another boy to her brood, Ward says her whole family is “thrilled” with the new addition.
“The fact that we are having our third boy is thrilling and a little petrifying. I am hugely overwhelmed with numbers and my boys are doing so well!” she shares. “But we are very excited.”
“I’m an only child, so I loved the idea of having a large family,” says Ward. “And boys will always love their moms.”
