Eating olive oil during pregnancy ‘boosts quality of breast milk’


A new study shows that consuming extra virgin olive oil during pregnancy improves breast milk quality.

Salad dressings are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fats that help your baby grow.

They even cross the placental barrier and improve the child’s development in the womb.

Lead author Dr. Maria Rodriguez Lagunas said:

The findings are based on female rats fed olive oil for 6 weeks. Analysis of blood samples identified chemical derivatives of the mother and her pups.

Antioxidants called hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol destroy free radicals that damage DNA.

Dr. Rodrigues-Lagunas said:

“Furthermore, encouraging levels of olive oil compounds and their metabolites were detected in offspring plasma.”

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants. Contains essential nutrients, hormones and antibodies that protect against infectious and metabolic diseases.

Breastfeeding also has many short- and long-term benefits for mothers, such as reducing the risk of breast cancer.

Extra virgin olive oil is the main source of fat in the Mediterranean diet and has long been touted for its health benefits.

Dr. Rodriguez Lagunas of the University of Barcelona said:

“They provide a basis for future research on the effects of plant compounds on maternal and offspring health.”

Extra virgin olive oil is easy to digest, aids in stomach function, and prevents constipation and colic.

Helps absorb vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for the growth of babies and children because it regulates calcium.

It also encourages the intake of minerals that are essential for strengthening bones and muscles.

This gives children greater protection against the risk of fractures early in life and osteoporosis in old age.

Olive oil lowers bad cholesterol, a major cause of obesity affecting 1 in 3 children between the ages of 6 and 9. Doctors recommend replacing animal fat with it.

A lower risk of asthma was also reported in mothers who consumed moderate amounts of olive oil during pregnancy.

Their babies have a more developed immune system and have been found to be at less risk of rhinitis and allergies.

In Italy, doctors strongly recommend using solid olive oil for babies who are weaning from breast milk.

They even recommend adding it to baby formula to get the benefits of the substance, especially for babies suffering from colic.

Dr. Rodrigues-Lagunas added:

“Therefore, nutritional interventions during pregnancy and lactation may affect breast milk quality and thus infant health.”

Extra virgin olive oil is found in Italian breads such as pizza and focaccia. You can bake or fry vegetables, and you can even sprinkle them on soups and pastas.

The study is published in the Journal of Food Chemistry.
