Gunmen ‘rape’ pregnant woman in attack on Niger community

A gunman reportedly raped a pregnant woman during an attack on Donakdona, a village in Siloro LGA, Niger.

Speaking to TheCable on Monday, Salis Sabo, a spokesman for the Coalition of Shiroro Youth Association (COSA), said the attack occurred on December 21.

Sabo said gunmen stormed the village after residents who had previously fled the community returned to harvest their produce.

He said the pregnant woman was unable to escape her attackers because of her condition, adding that she was raped in the process.

“It was Donakdona village in Garkogo district that was attacked. The incident happened on Wednesday. Residents had previously fled the village but have returned for harvest,” he said. .

“Unfortunately, when they heard that they had returned to the village, they attacked them.

“She was raped but didn’t die. She is still alive. She was taken to Zumba town hospital and is now in a Zumba IDP camp.”

Also confirming the attack, Muhammad Tukur, coordinator of the Siloro Youth Development Forum Elena Axis, said the shooters had moved to the Pandogori region of the state.

“We have learned that there have been many attacks from these areas in Chukba and surrounding villages and that bandits are now in Pandgari, but the reports are true,” he said.

We reached out to Wasiu Abiodun, a spokesman for the Niger Police, who promised to update TheCable as soon as he learned more about the attack.
