“I was like, ‘I have a pretty high pain tolerance, so I’m going to be okay.

After inserting the birth control pills, doctors told personal trainer Smallwood that she could feel “a little cramping” for 7 to 10 minutes and a nurse would check on her.

After five minutes had passed, Smallwood began to feel “weird”.

“A nurse came to check on me and said, ‘How are you?

“And I was like, ‘Is it weird because it hurts so bad all the time?'”

The nurse didn’t mind and told me to wait a few more minutes as the IUD had just “settled down”.

“All hell broke free”

But Smallwood got worse.

“She came back five minutes later and I said, ‘Give me the bag I’m going to throw up in,'” she said.

She handed me the bag and I started vomiting. At this point, I started looking black.

“Within the next five minutes, all hell broke loose.

“My limbs were numb. I couldn’t feel my legs or arms. I was sweating profusely. She helped me take off my sweatshirt.”

Smallwood tried many positions to ease the pain, but pain relief continued to evade her.

“I’m trying my back, stomach and all fours,” she explained.

Smallwood then noticed a worried look on the nurse’s face.

“She became increasingly concerned, but also said, ‘Some people feel pain differently. We’ve seen this before.’

From there, Smallwood’s pain worsened, and she began to experience something she’d only ever heard described in the movies.

“I knew I was going into labor,” she said.

In between “contractions”, Smallwood had moments of painless “bliss” experiencing an “endorphin release.”

“When this pain comes, it’s the worst I’ve ever experienced. Is this normal?” she asked the nurse before enduring another wave of pain.

At one point, Smallwood’s hands and feet became immobile and a nurse asked her family if they had a seizure. they don’t.

The nurse called the gynecologist back into the room and ordered her to remove the IUD immediately.

“The doctor looked in and she said, ‘Oh, I have to get this out now,'” Smallwood said.

“So she had an emergency tooth extraction, and when she could finally breathe, she was like, ‘What’s wrong?

When the IUD was inserted, it was positioned on the nerve – effectively sending Smallwood’s body into labor.

“My body was trying to push it out,” she explained.

“I was fighting for my life.”

Her cervix was dilated by several centimeters.

“[The gynecologist]said I would have had an epidural by then[in labor].”
