‘Miracle’ Baby Born To UK Couple Who Battled Cancer During Pregnancy

The baby was born healthy with no side effects.

A baby was born to a couple who battled cancer and underwent chemotherapy during pregnancy. James Jefferson-Loveday’s wife Bethany was 21 weeks pregnant and just months away from being diagnosed with cancer, according to the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Previously, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma last December. Mr. Loveday’s diagnosis prompted the couple to ask for a baby.

In a Facebook post, the hospital wrote: She was pregnant in January, but joy later turned to despair when she was diagnosed with high-grade non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (a similar form of cancer) at 21 weeks pregnant.

“The combination of pregnancy and high-grade non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is extremely rare, and Bethany is the first case I have treated as a consultant hematologist for 25 years,” said Dr. Salim Shafeek, a consultant hematologist at the hospital.

According to a press release, Bethany’s symptoms began in the first trimester of her pregnancy while her husband was still undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma. When her symptoms persisted for weeks, she consulted her doctor, though at this point her problem was thought to be pregnancy related.

“My head started to put a lot of pressure on me, and I had the worst headache I’ve ever had. I had trouble breathing, couldn’t do my normal activities, and had a hard lump on my collarbone. But all this. Nevertheless, I denied that something was wrong. I thought my symptoms were pregnancy related and the lump must have been a cyst.

When she was diagnosed with cancer, she said:

Before undergoing a rigorous course of six cycles of chemotherapy, she discussed all treatment options with the hospital’s consultant obstetrician.

Dr. Shafeek advised against using more aggressive measures or delaying chemotherapy. Her chemotherapy had to be done by 35 weeks before she was healthy enough to give birth. She underwent a caesarean section and her daughter was born in perfect health with no side effects. “Both James and I agree that Heidi’s birthday was the best day of our lives. ” said Bethany.
