Pregnant woman finds out her insurance will no longer work at Genesis OBGYN during third trimester


Tucson, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) – Women across the state are looking for new doctors after Genesis OBGYN and Arizona’s Blue Cross Blue Shield terminated their contracts on Dec. 15.

As a result, over 16,000 patients have lost their current female healthcare providers.

Ashley Meeks said that as a third-trimester first-time mom, worrying about what’s next can be exhausting and stressful.

“This is my first baby. My husband and I have been trying for years. We struggled with infertility and I am so grateful to have gotten this far,” Meeks said. It allowed me to completely take care of my baby and myself.On November 18th, I was devastated when I received an email saying they might be off network. I became very anxious.”

The email Meeks received included the following quote:

“Please call the number on the back of your membership card or call 877-318-4693 ASAP to express your concerns regarding the upcoming closure of the clinic.”

On December 5th, Ashley received another email from Genesis OBGYN asking him to post on social media. It said in partial quote:

“Continuing to contact BCBS or post on the BCBS Facebook page to remove more than 50 obstetrics and gynecology providers from our network will impact access to care for thousands of women in Arizona. Please ensure that BCBS understands that this is an unacceptable change to give.”

Ashley said the emails made her very uneasy and didn’t understand why Genesis OBGYN was asking patients to reach out on their behalf.

“I’ve never seen anyone in a medical setting reach out to a patient and ask them to stay networked with their insurance. It was so weird and so stressful,” Meeks said.

Ashley is in the third trimester of her pregnancy and has been seeing the same doctor since she was a teenager, so she said she didn’t like being forced.

Thankfully, she was contacted by BCBSAZ regarding her pregnancy, but she still feels like she doesn’t know who’s wrong.

“Do you trust the OB/GYN you’ve been going to since you were a teenager, or do you trust your insurance company?” says Meeks. “I understand that providers deserve to be paid fairly, and I understand the Blue Cross argument that patients deserve a fair price as well, but we are still in the middle. It is written.”

A statement from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona confirmed that Ashley can continue to see doctors, stating:

“For patients expecting or in the process of care, our care management team is coordinating with Genesis OBGYN to ensure that the current course of care is not disrupted.”

“Whether you are pregnant or not, who you go to for OBGYN care is a personal choice and a very important decision because it is such a big part of your health and your Because it impacts so many other parts of their lives.. Forcing so many people to change providers is incredibly frustrating,” says Meeks.

So far, Ashley has been told she can stay at Genesis OBGYN for up to 8 weeks postpartum, after which she will need to find another doctor.

She worries about the many other women in the same boat. It will take months to go to another doctor.

Genesis OBGYN and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona terminate contract (Tucson, Arizona) –

Genesis OBGYN, the largest group of OBGYN healthcare providers in the Tucson area, today announced that it has terminated its contract with the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) effective December 15, 2022.

Over the past few months, Genesis OBGYN has been in active discussions with BCBSAZ regarding contract renewal. To date, the two organizations have been unable to reach a mutual agreement. As a result, BCBSAZ will allow termination of the agreement between the parties, leaving more than 16,000 patients without their current female healthcare providers. Genesis OBGYN patients have been informed that their contract with BCBSAZ has ended.

“Genesis OBGYN is committed to providing the best care possible and minimizing the impact of this event on affected patients,” said Christopher Sullivan, M.D., Ph.D., Genesis OBGYN Medical Director. says.

BCBSAZ member patients who are currently pregnant, undergoing a course of treatment, or are scheduled for surgery may be able to visit Genesis OBGYN offices and providers as an in-network provider until delivery and postnatal care is completed To do so, each patient should request continuation of care and is encouraged to contact the health care provider’s office for assistance.

According to BCBSAZ, check-ups and routine check-ups not related to pregnancy or surgery are not covered by continuing care. These patients may continue to see their healthcare provider for scheduled visits, but out-of-network costs may apply.

“Genesis OBGYN hopes to reach a mutual agreement with BCBSAZ and network with BCBSAZ in the future,” Sullivan said.

We are disappointed with the way this negotiation has progressed and have been unable to reach an agreement. We have offered generous terms, but Genesis has chosen to walk away. Offers that stay in the network are still available.

Negotiation is normal business. Honest negotiation is the expected course of business. In healthcare, the best negotiations have the patient’s needs in mind.

After declining our latest offer this morning, Genesis OBGYN in Pima County took the unfortunate step of sending messages to patients containing false statements. leaders and their private equity investors were cautioned against making false statements and asked to correct what they published.

We value our providers, including Genesis doctors and medical professionals, and want them to stay in our network. To be paid, honored and respected. We hope that Genesis OBGYN will accept our latest offer (the paperwork is in their hands) and stop further upsetting our patients and our members.

I know this is causing confusion. It’s the last thing a patient needs. It is certainly the last thing a mother or patient needs while in care.

We apologize that despite our best efforts, we were unable to reach an agreement. We have proposed extensions many times and increased the reimbursement amount many times, but we have not been able to finish it. We carefully track payments statewide to ensure providers are paid fairly. Reimbursement demands in this case were much higher than the market.

It is common for practices to be owned or backed by private equity firms. Unfortunately, some of these companies, while focused on providing high returns for their investors, are driving up costs for patients. If Genesis OBGYN wishes to remain in our network, more than fair suggestions are presented. We welcome them with open arms.

For patients expecting or in the process of care, the Care Management Team will coordinate with Genesis OBGYN to ensure that the current course of care is not interrupted.
