This doggy detective has sniffed out a serious problem.
A Missouri mother says she let her smart dog know she had a urinary tract infection when she was eight months pregnant.
Brittany Welsh, 30, recorded a video of her loyal golden retriever Charlie pinching her swollen belly with her wet nose and trying to lift her legs on her back.
The pregnant woman then shared the footage on TikTok, where the clip has been viewed over 1.2 million times.
Charlie’s strange behavior prompts Welsh to see a doctor, who diagnoses her with a urinary tract infection.
“I’m seriously not right for him,” Welsh wrote of Charlie in the caption for her viral clip.
According to the American Pregnancy Association, UTIs are common among expectant mothers, with the highest risk between 6 and 24 weeks due to “urinary tract changes.” If left untreated, urinary tract infections can lead to kidney infections, resulting in premature birth and low birth weight in infants.
Drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day, taking vitamin C, avoiding tight-fitting pants, and staying in the bathtub for no more than 30 minutes are some of the things you can do to prevent urinary tract infections. It’s the method.
Thankfully, Welsh was given “a lot of medicine” and sent home hours after arriving at the doctor.
She gave birth to a healthy baby girl and credits her dog for helping the last months of her pregnancy go smoothly.
According to a 2016 study published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases and cited by Statnews, “Researchers spent eight weeks training five Labrador and Golden Retriever dogs, and after identifying infected urine, were found to be primarily We gave them hundreds of samples of females.”
As a result, dogs were able to detect samples contaminated with four different bacteria with at least 90% accuracy.
Meanwhile, viewers in the comments section below Welsh’s clip were overwhelmed by Charlie’s actions, with some saying their dog helped alert them to other medical problems.
“My dog once tried to tell me that he had heart problems, and he certainly did,” declared one user.
“Animals know. I work at an animal hospital and one of our technicians had a seizure. Her service dog gave her a warning about 5-10 minutes into the episode.” ‘ declared another.
Some moms also said their dogs knew when they were about to give birth.
“I woke me up at 5 a.m. nudging my stomach and whining. When I got up my water broke,” said one woman.
