BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – Lawmakers in Washington passed a $1.7 trillion package of appropriations last week, giving Ukraine billions of dollars in aid. But it also mandated certain protections for pregnant women in the workplace.
Pregnancy can be seen as a full-time job with long restless nights, not to mention pain. Some argue that there are many.
The $1.7 trillion appropriations bill the president signed into law last week makes it easier for mothers to return to work.
“It’s not fair when you think you can work just as well as a 25-year-old woman or man who isn’t pregnant,” said Dr. Ralph Dautelieb with Baton Rouge’s Oschner.
The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act requires employers to provide facilities for pregnant women, such as better access to water, more frequent bathroom breaks, and reduced demands for physically demanding jobs. Mainly obliged.
“Providing these competencies in the workplace without punishing or discouraging pregnant women from doing this will make the pregnancy experience easier. It helps pregnant women in the workplace, just like what companies are already doing,” said Dr. Dauterive.
There are also pumping laws that require companies to provide designated pumping stations and feeding stations.
State Rep. C Denise Marcelle (D-D) said, “I think it’s always great to see people getting jobs and being able to care for their medical needs. I believe that’s what medical needs are.” says.
As part of the state’s women’s caucuses, Rep. Marcel says she and other lawmakers passed similar legislation for women in prison, but these news provisions take it a step further.
“And as we go down this path, we see that this is good for business and not necessarily bad for business. We will be able to get the same wages across the board,” continued Rep. Marcel.
According to the National Women’s Law Center, less than 2% of all workers nationwide become pregnant each year.
