What Is Pregnancy Nose? TikTok Trend Shows Off Bigger Noses

A new TikTok trend is wondering what the hell happens to women’s noses during pregnancy. One photo shows her face when she is pregnant and the other photo is when she is not pregnant.

Does pregnancy make your nose taller?

For some women, the answer is yes.

“The underlying reason is that hormones increase during pregnancy, and those hormones cause blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow to certain areas, which the uterus needs,” says Christine Greves. says Dr. Her OB-GYN from Orlando, Fla. tells her TODAY.com. “It’s not necessarily selective. So certain areas of our body’s mucous membranes have increased blood flow, and our nose is one of them.”

Some people may not like how their pregnant nose looks, but for the most part it’s “harmless.” However, it can be accompanied by other symptoms.

“The most common[physiological change]is hyperemia of the nasal and sinus membranes caused by vasodilation associated with the hormonal changes of pregnancy,” said Lennox Hill’s OB-GYN vice chair. Dr. Eran Bornstein said. Hospital, tell TODAY.com by email. “This can cause edema/swelling, congestion, nosebleeds, and in some cases significant discomfort. In some patients, the nose may appear puffy and differently shaped.”

Some people find it annoying, but these changes are temporary.

“You’ll be back to normal within six weeks[of giving birth],” says Greves. “I tell people to do themselves a favor and hope it returns to normal. But the timing is different for each person.”

People expect to notice changes in their bodies, such as bumps and swelling in their legs. Another difference they might notice is a white line running down the middle of the abdomen, where the white line darkens and becomes a black line.

“Their pigmentation may change,” says Greves. “That’s what women ask me.”

Bornstein says people may notice other unexpected differences in their skin.

“Other common visual changes that can appear on the skin of a pregnant person include hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin in various areas of the body, including the face), stretch marks on the skin, There are skin tag growths and things like that,” he says.

Some swelling is to be expected during pregnancy, but doctors are concerned that patients may swell quickly or become more bloated than the average pregnant woman.

“Rapid or severe swelling that can occur in the face, hands, or feet may be associated with pre-eclampsia,” says Bornstein. Patients experiencing symptoms such as eye, abdominal pain, and nausea/vomiting should contact their healthcare provider immediately to be evaluated for pre-eclampsia.”

Greves said it’s important for health care providers to know about the changes during pregnancy, and encourages pregnant women to share their symptoms with their doctors, even if they don’t indicate a health condition.

“Whenever they’re worried about something, they should tell the doctor,” she says. “Everyone is unique and it’s important to mention anything about them.”
