Woman goalkeeper ‘sacked’ due to pregnancy – English

(ANSA) – ROME, 21 December – The Italian third division goalkeeper has been sacked after being pregnant, she told QN-Il Resto del Carlino newspaper on Wednesday.

“I’m pregnant and my team has stopped paying my wages,” said Alice Pignanoli, 34, shoot stopper for Lucchese, a Serie C side based in Lucca, Tuscany.

Born in Reggio Emilia, Pignanoli played for Reggiana, AC Milan in Serie A and Torres, winning the Super Cup in the league and the latter in 2012. I was told by Lucchese manager Mario Santoro that a contract signed last summer had to be honored and that they were no longer going to pay me what they owed me.

The goalie said in a lengthy post on her social media profile, “I am a broken woman, mother and athlete. I am also very lonely, incompetent and an old toy to be thrown away.” Another member of the team, Cesena, renewed her contract when she was seven months pregnant, sending a strong and symbolic signal to women’s football where dismissals for pregnancy are common.

“After what happened to Cezena two years ago, I never thought this would happen,” she said (ANSA).
